The PUMA Slipstream Returns to the Streets

They say legends never die. The truth to this statement reigns supreme in the world of sneakers where reboots of some of footwear’s most beloved classics are taking center stage.
One particular model that has been a regular contender for the title of comeback king is the Puma Slipstream. Puma’s trademark slogan ‘Made for the Street. Built for the Court’ has cemented its place in our ever-changing cultural zeitgeist.
The original Slipstream was released as a high-performance basketball shoe in 1987 and quickly found popularity amongst athletes and footwear fanatics. Famed for its comfort and stability, the Slipstream garnered its own tagline “engineered for the serious player” thanks to its SOFTFOAM+ insole and well-protected heel for extra cushioning. The current silhouette remains true to the original ‘80s heritage model with some modern tweaks to elevate it just that bit more. A layered upper with curved formstrips on the side gives the shoe a retro feel albeit with a futuristic twist.
Here is how today’s tastemakers are wearing the Puma Slipstream out and about.

This look is tapping into everything we’ve loved about 2022 so far with Roel’s style evoking Ye in the matrix. While baggy cargo pants may slightly obstruct the view of the actual sneakers, the Slipstream’s chunky silhouette paired with bold, retro sunglasses finish off this look by bringing balance to what is already a very apt fit.

Eccentric and playful when it comes to texture, Renata’s layering of this outfit speaks for itself. Bringing together several juxtaposed elements, this look is proof that tonal fits can be spiced up with just a touch of color. The reimagined forms of the sneaker are enhanced by various shaping elements Renata pulls into this fit, with the sharp contrast of the puffer jacket collar mirroring the form of the Slipstream’s geometric silhouette.

Despite its complexity, the Slipstream is an extremely versatile shoe to style, just as at home in an athletic setting as it is with more casual and street fits. Masha plays up the monochrome palette and incorporates an element of skate-style aesthetic.

Nathan keeps it casual with peak Y2K finesse. Minimal effort and maximum reward, the black singlet and white cargo shorts combo squared up with retrofuturistic sunglasses highlight the dynamic nature of the Slipstream.

Fenna really knows how to drive home the tonal aesthetic. The Slipstream is paired once again with cargo pants, this time tapered at the heel to expose the shoe. The pops of color in Fenna’s look (from the ink on her heels to the print on her top and all the many accessories in between) accentuate the details of the sneaker and go a long way in making this outfit stand out against the matching backdrop.

Retro sunglasses make yet another feature and it’s not surprising considering how well they pair with heritage-style sneakers. Tori’s look makes use of eye-catching layering — forget the miniskirt, all hail the dawn of the minishirt!

Julia styles her fit with tapered cargo pants and a puffy bomber, adding a sheer top for that touch of elegance. The colors and textures of the outfit are accented by the touches of blue in the sneaker which complement Julia’s tangerine locks.

If we haven’t yet convinced you of the Slipstream’s versatility, Akin’s look certainly will. A camping chair and wrap-around sunglasses give major outdoor vibes and juxtapose the sleek velour zip-up top and wide-legged pants. Finding a sneaker to bring it all together is a hard ask but the Slipstream manages it with ease.
