Summer fresh in the New Balance 550

There is no doubt that the New Balance 550 is the kick of the Summer. New Balance in general has taken the world by storm this year, with dope designs that spark nostalgia in the best ways.

As with so many of today’s hottest kick silhouettes, the New Balance 550 first started off as a basketball design. First released in 1989 and designed by Steven Smith, the model followed basketball sneaker trends of the era featuring a low-top construction. However, the 550 eventually ended up falling off the radar. Without major athlete endorsements, and with large sneaker brands creating similar silhouettes, it didn’t get as much initial hype. The kick sadly stayed tucked away in sneaker history for years – until recently.

Once Teddy Santis, Founder and Creative Director of NYC fashion and lifestyle label Aimé Leon Dore, joined New Balance things changed. Teddy came on to oversee New Balance’s Made In USA line, and he gravitated towards slightly more obscure styles – needless to say, he was immediately drawn to the 550. Teddy successfully released some highly-coveted updates to the 550. And the rest, as they say, is history. The New Balance 550 quickly blew up and has become one of the most sought-after silhouettes of 2022.

The best part? The New Balance 550 has made its way to finishline.com. The Men’s New Balance 550 ‘Oreo’ and the all-black Kids’ style are set to arrive very soon, so stay tuned.
