Sneakerhead Book Club: Nike SB: The Dunk Book by Sandy Bodecker

Sneakerhead Book Club is a semi-regular series reviewing, you guessed it, books about the kicks you love. In the latest edition, we check out Nike SB: The Dunk Book by Sandy Bodecker.

Pop quiz, hotshot: what’s the most sought-after shoe model in the game right now?

If you said the Nike Dunk, you’d be correct (anecdotally, at least.)

The Nike Dunk has a long, illustrious history stretching back to 1985, when it was the other iconic basketball sneaker that changed the game forever.

It wasn’t just a favorite on the hardwood, though. Once they hit the discount bins, they were snapped up by skateboarders who liked the extra padding and ankle support the Dunk offered over other brands of the era.

Eventually Beaverton caught on to its popularity with skaters, and Nike SB was born (after a bumpy start.)

I’ll spare you the history lesson — you can find it here, if you’d like — but it’s safe to say the Dunk has more than earned its place in the pantheon of some of the Swoosh’s greatest silhouettes.

Whether you’re looking to learn more about the model or you want to take a trip down memory lane, Nike SB: The Dunk Book is definitely a strong addition to your sneaker library.

The Dunk Book opens with a love letter to the SB Dunk from late Nike legend and former vice president of special projects Sandy Bodecker, who brought the Nike SB division to life. Bodecker passed in the fall of 2018.

“If sneakers could talk, I can only imagine the stories you could tell,” Bodecker wrote in the letter.

The SB Dunk has long been considered one of the great storytelling sneakers, from its very first days as a skateboarding pro model for the four sponsored Nike riders: Danny Supa, Reese Forbes, Gino Iannucci and Richard Mulder.

The Dunk Book combines product imagery and skateboarding photos with vignettes from skaters, designers and sneaker industry heads for another must-have for your coffee table.

As has been the case with previous editions of Sneakerhead Book Club, this particular book isn’t one you’ll get a lot of true “reading” out of. But it’s a great resource for jogging the memory about some classic colorways or finding an origin story or two.
