Official Images of the Nike SB Dunk High “Hawaii”

Nike’s merry band of misfits at Nike SB have been known to spark up a yearly SB Dunk tribute to the 4/20 “holiday,” and this year’s style is a potent SB Dunk High “Hawaii.” Also known as the “Maui Wowie,” the Hawaii offers a high-color tribute to tropical vacations and favored pastimes alike with a tear-away upper and other special detailing.Unlike the on-foot photos seen earlier in the month, Nike’s official product images of the “Hawaii” belie its true nature, showing only an upper covered fully in blue and peach floral print. Though this Hawaiian shirt-inspired veneer is certainly befitting of the shoe’s moniker, what’s not revealed is the bottom layer that the “Maui Wowie” nickname comes from. This layer offers both orange floral print and hairy green suede reminiscent of other 4/20 releases like the now-legendary SB Dunk High “Skunk.” The only nod to this nickname in the official images appears on the insole, which features a custom print centered around a inebriated skull. Even Nike’s official product description dances around the hidden detail, saying the top layer “tears away over time, revealing surprises that further contribute to the shoe’s loud motif.” Elsewhere, hemp tongues and Swooshes work with orange tags, light-toned midsoles and cream laces to complete the look.Expect the Nike SB Dunk High “Hawaii/Maui Wowie” to release via Nike SNKRS and SB stockists like The Berrics Canteen on April 23. The MSRP is set at $120 USD.For Dunk news of the Nike Sportswear variety, check out the Dunk High “Panda.”

ASICS’ GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 Channels the Classic “Grape” Motif

While still relatively new to the footwear scene, ASICS’ GEL-Kayano Trainer 21 has been produced in a few appealing colorways, one of which was enlisted in the brand’s “Monozukuri” Pack that paid respects to Japanese craftsmanship. Next in line for the up and coming silhouette is this brand new “White/Gentry Purple” makeup that owns a “Grape”-like palette which is often associated with the classic Air Jordan 5.The new rendition starts out with a buttery suede base layer that coats its perforated toe boxes, side panels, toe tip overlays and mudguards in a dusted gray hue. “Gentry Purple” and bright teal-ish blue accents then take charge by alternating on the tiger stripe molds which hug the lateral and medial walls. Further purple notes are dropped off on the heel pieces while more bursts of teal spill onto the interior liners and rear end ASICS branding. Shoe strings are given a pure white surface to provide an extra dosage of contrasting.Midsoles — which are packed with FluidRide cushioning — are mainly presented with off-white exteriors, but come offset with exposed GEL foam in teal and a purple mid-foot mold.Select retailers like Mita now have this pair available for purchase for ¥18,700 (approx. $170 USD).For more sneaker news, check out this new understated ASICS’ GEL-MC Plus colorway.

Vans Places Playful Turtle Print On The Old Skool’s Sidewall

When Vans was founded back in 1966, it would offer custom sneakers to anyone who came with a color request or brought their own material — because its factory was right next to its retail store. As Vans grew and changed in the ’70s and ’80s, it started offering other special embellishments on its footwear like custom sidewall print. Now, in 2021 that custom sidewall option is being acknowledged with a new turtle-printed iteration of the Old Skool.Sporty seafoam green hues coat the canvas and suede upper — the former material is used on the quarter panels and collar, the latter on the toebox, eyestays and heel — with white contrast stitching, Jazz Stripes, laces and collars adding airy flair to the mix. Down below, Vans’ famed “Off the Wall” skateboard graphic is turned into playful cartoon turtle, done up in navy and placed in repeating fashion on the white midsole. Finishing touches are supplied by a sporty blue foxing stripe and a recognizable red heel badge. This turtle-adorned Vans Old Skool is available now at Japanese retailers like BILLY’s Tokyo, and is priced at a tax-included ¥8,250 JPY (approximately $75 USD). A US release may follow in the coming weeks. For more from Vans check out its new capsule of floral-printed footwear and apparel, created in partnership with Liberty of London.
