Timberland’s Future73 initiative was announced in early 2023, enlisting six world-class creatives to reimagine its iconic 6-Inch Boot. Suzanne Oude Hengel supplied unique knitted interpretations, while A-COLD-WALL*’s Samuel Ross introduced futuristic laceless versions. Next is New York-based creative Nina Chanel Abney, an American contemporary artist highlighting Black culture through race, gender, and pop culture references. Abney celebrates the 50th anniversary of Timberland’s 6-Inch Boot by looking to the future, inserting her bold personality into the historic design. Smooth brown leather uppers kick things off, featuring light suede and camouflage overlays with scrambled Timberland lettering. The brand’s tree emblem is debossed into the outer heels, while standard branding lands on the tongue labels. White rippled outsoles complete the design. On the other hand, Abney digs the ’78 Hiker out of the archives, paying tribute to Mother Nature through a hiking-ready design. Full-grain brown leather uppers are contrasted by muted green overlays, vibrant orange laces, and track-enhancing outsoles destined for outdoor play.
