New Balance’s 57/40 stands alongside other models like the 327 and 237 as a retro-tinged design that reworks classic performance footwear for the lifestyle market. Though it debuted recently — in January, to be specific — it’s already been collaborated on by atmos, mita x WHIZ LIMITED and N. HOOLYWOOD and done up in pink for Valentine’s Day. Now, it’s keeping the ball rolling with a familiar all-gray colorway for women, a staple NB palette that’s used on everything from the 574 to the 992 and 990v5.Uppers mix various shades of gray that range from sandy to steely, and combine a veritable plethora of different materials as well. Perforated nubuck appears on the toeboxes and collars, shaggy suedes on the toe caps and heels, shorthair suede on the heel clip and eyestays and leather on midfoot and mudguard alike. Branding is handled by large white N midfoot logos, rimmed in silver. “The intelligent choice” branding is hidden under white laces on the tongue tag.
