America wasn’t the only one celebrating a milestone birthday on July 4th. Martin Michaeli, founder of premium European comfort brand Mephisto, turned 90 the same day.
Born in Saarbrucken, on the French-German border, Michaeli grew up during the Second World War and trained as a shoe engineer in Germany before making the bold move to leave Europe for New York at age 21. “I had no money, spoke no English; I was a war child who had spent two years in bomb shelters,” he recalled in a 2022 interview with Swiss business magazine Bilanz. He planned to stay in America for a year, but ended up spending six there, working as a footwear designer and eventually as a plant manager in Maine.
He returned to Europe and founded Mephisto in Alsace, France, in 1965 with the money he saved during his years in the U.S. He chose the location at the recommendation of his old friend from shoe school Horst Dassler, then head of Adidas. He got inspired to name his new brand Mephisto after visiting a local museum devoted to Faust author Johann Wolfgang Goethe.
In the years that followed Michaeli channeled his vision for product that would blend outstanding comfort, craftsmanship, and quality into one of Europe’s leading footwear brands. In addition to developing a devoted fanbase of “Mephistophiles” (Arnold Schwarzenegger bought 14 of the same pair at one point), Michaeli earned countless accolades. In 1995, French president François Mitterand awarded him the National Order of Merit. Five years later, French president Jacques Chirac made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, the country’s highest decoration.
Today Michaeli lives in Switzerland and continues to serve as chairman of the board, playing an active role in the company alongside his children, Marc and Stéphanie Michaeli.
