Jean-Michel Basquiat’s estate, represented by Artestar, has joined forces with Dr. Martens for a second collaborative collection. Following up the two’s inaugural capsule in July 2020, this new offering brings two of Basquiat’s most famous works — Untitled (1982) and Pez Dispenser — to the iconic 1460 boot and 1461 shoe.Basquiat’s bright, bold and powerful artworks leap off each Dr. Martens’ black leather base: Untitled (1982) covers the entire quarter panel and sockliner of the 1460 boot, while a crown embellishment appears on the lace deubre. Meanwhile, the 1461 shoe features Pez Dispenser’s dinosaur rising up out of its midsole’s lateral half to sit on the quarter panel. Both pairs are completed with a black and yellow heel tab adorned by Basquiat’s familiar crown graphic plus another crown visible under the thick “bouncing” rubber soles, and are packaged in custom shoeboxes. There’s also a black leather backpack with a full color print of Untitled (1982) included in the collection. The duo of styles continue a busy 2021 for Dr. Martens: in recent months the British footwear brand has collaborated with everyone from CLOT and Supreme to Bodega and Rick Owens, and even worked with the estate of Basquiat’s contemporary and friend Keith Haring back in January. The Jean-Michel Basquiat x Dr. Martens collection will release on July 3 through the Dr. Martens webstore and select retailers. For more Dr. Martens content, check out Bodega co-founder Oliver Mak’s installment of Sole Mates, in which he discusses his love of the 1461.Click here to view full gallery at HYPEBEAST
