It wasn’t too long ago that luxury sneakers were passé, yet today the world of footwear is almost dominated by French, Spanish and Italian houses producing some of the hottest sneakers around — and Gucci, with offerings such as its Basket Sneaker — are at the top of the ladder. The Gucci Basket first came out last year in high-top form, and now Alessandro Michele’s footwear team has taken the shoe down a notch, offering it as a low-top in a quartet of retro colorways. Drawing inspiration from basketball and the 1990s, the pair combines traditional house cues with sporting references for a sneaker that doesn’t feel forced, and in fact, could look just as good when styled with all-Gucci as it would with a pair of B-Ball shorts or even denim pants.Gucci accomplishes this thanks to the colorways, which range from a busy and very retro black iteration injected with pops of red, purple, gold and green, to simpler pairs of white and lime green. In addition to this, you’ll find black/green/white, and a final standout pair in a USA-spec red, white and blue scheme. Depending on the colorway you opt for, you’ll get a choice of Gucci tropes, from “GG” emblems on the midsole to a motif repeat pattern or perforated leather on the toe box.The pair is made from Demetra, an animal-free raw material that’s made from sustainable, renewable and bio-based properties. Gucci treats it like leather by using the same traditional tanning process, thus maintaining a luxurious look and feel. All four pairs retail for £700 GBP/$950 USD apiece.
