Footwear Industry Veteran Wayne Elsey Publishes Latest Book

Ever since Wayne Elsey caught sight of a child’s sandal washed up on a beach following the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, he has been determined to find ways for the billions of slightly used pairs of shoes and unsold inventory to be donated to people in need worldwide. It began with his founding of Soles4Souls in 2005 and expanded to his launches of Sneakers4Good, Funds2Orgs, and, most recently, TreeRaise.
The primary mission has always been to deliver shoes to people who desperately need them. Along the way, Elsey discovered benefits related to micro enterprising and sustainability. In short: reselling donated footwear provides income and helps keep shoes out of landfills.
“The reuse economy in developing nations is a hand up, not hand out,” Elsey says. “They repair, fix, and clean the product to resell in order to put food on the table.”
The Reuse Economy: Breaking Free from Throwaway Culture (available on Amazon) offers a compelling roadmap for shifting from a destructive “take-make-waste” model to a sustainable, circular system that empowers communities worldwide. Rather than relying on guilt to drive environmental awareness, Elsey’s book focuses on proven, actionable solutions. It explores how a simple choice to repurpose gently worn items can dramatically reduce landfill waste and pollution, while simultaneously providing an economic lifeline for micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations across Central America as well as countries like Haiti and Cambodia.
The book draws deeply from Elsey’s personal experiences, including trips to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake. That’s where he came face-to-face with the vibrant spirit and resilience of people fighting to survive with dignity. Readers get a detailed look at how repurposed goods—from shoes to apparel—become essential inventory for local vendors operating in makeshift lumber shops and roadside markets, turning what North Americans view as waste into a powerful tool for community wealth and self-reliance. The book is a resource for business leaders, consumers, and advocates looking to vote with their dollars, support secondhand markets, and champion policies that promote longevity over obsolescence.
“This book isn’t about guilt. It’s about a better system that already works, and what happens when enough of us decide to be part of the solution in the reuse economy,” Elsey explains. “You’re already making a choice with every purchase. This book just makes sure you know the implications of your purchase choices.”
Elsey believes his book is a timely solution for the shoe industry in a business climate where brands are competing with their store returns, odd lots with bottom feeders, and charities that say they export but sell online. “eBay is flooded with this, whereas our reuse organizations present definitive agreements with our partners guaranteeing that 100 percent of their donations are exported,” he says. Partners can also request that their product not be shipped to certain countries. “We bring awareness to the reality of what true reuse is versus brands competing with themselves in their local markets and/or online.”
