Back in the late 90s, the sneaker game for women looked a little different.
We didn’t see the collaborations, the innovation, the support for women who love kicks as much as (or more than) men do.
At the time, only one WNBA player had her own signature shoe: legendary Texas native Sheryl Swoopes, the first player to sign with the W back in 1997.
Swoopes’s Nike signature line is equally history-making. The Air Swoopes had seven iterations and was a go-to for player exclusives for a host of WNBA stars over the years.
Jordan Brand recognized around the same time that women’s contributions to hoops were undeniable, and that there weren’t a lot of options sneaker-wise that they could call their own.
That’s where the Women’s Air Jordan OG came from. Featuring design cues taken from the Air Jordan 13 that released the same year, the AJ OG also boasted a dimpled leather upper, a sculpted midsole and head-turning style.
We got a retro release of the original colorway in early 2020, and Melody Ehsani dropped a cherry-adorned collab pair the following Spring.
Now we’ve got another Women’s Air Jordan OG in the pipeline, this time featuring neutral tones that are perfect for summer.
The Women’s Air Jordan OG ‘Coconut Milk,’ arriving on 5/24, is designed for lifestyle wear rather than on-court action. It features the same dimpled upper as the original, this time in the namesake ‘Coconut Milk’ suede rather than white leather.
A streak of pebbled orange leather, reminiscent of the basketball that inspired the shoe’s genesis, runs through the upper outlined in black for a visual pop.
Bring that ’98 heat outside this summer when the Women’s Air Jordan OG ‘Coconut Milk’ releases at finishline.com on 5/24.
