NYC’s Extra Butter and Russ & Daughters Join Forces on 50th-Anniversary PUMA Clyde
Celebrating 50 years of the iconic PUMA Clyde sneaker, downtown New York footwear retailer Extra Butter and neighboring culinary outpost Russ & Daughters have teamed up to craft a limited-edition version of the decades-old silhouette. In the ’70s, basketball player Walt “Clyde” Frazier emerged to the sport’s forefront for his impressive on-the-court moves and his signature off-the-court style. When Clyde approached PUMA for a custom pair of Suedes, the brand rearranged the original shoe’s construction with a lighter and wider shape, stamped the athlete’s name on its side and called it the official Clyde sneaker.Today, the silhouette has stood the test of time as a signature shape among fashion and sports alike. Referencing the shoes’ original launch in 1973, Exrtra Butter and Russ & Daughters’ version will be limited to just 73 pairs.“Growing up in New York, especially as a b-boy, the Clyde is an icon,” said Extra Butter’s creative director, Bernie Gross, in a statement. “It’s a simple, timeless classic and has served as a great canvas for designers to implement various aesthetics, trends and perspectives that can speak to a global audience for the past five decades. It’s a must-have for any sneaker enthusiast.”The collaborative silhouette dons leather in Russ & Daughters’ classic crisp white, blue and silver accent colors. Nodding to Russ’ century-long legacy in New York, the shoe features the restaurant’s emblematic fish patch alongside its server coats and faux fish scale leather on the heel, while additional branding boasts the food spot’s founding year: “NYC / 1914.” Inside, the footbed mimics Russ & Daughter’s storefront signage, and the backside of the tongue reads, “A New York City Story by Extra Butter.”Take a look at the design in the gallery above.
