Leave it to Las Vegas to learn which fashion statements have the winningest odds for Hollywood. According to VegasInsider’s recent analysis of what female stars wore to premieres of more than 100 of the highest-grossing movies of the past decade, you can bet on black. Specifically, black dresses.
More than 90 percent of the celebs analyzed wore dresses, while fewer than 10 percent donned other looks, like pantsuits or jumpsuits to promote their films. No matter what types of garments the stars (or their stylists) choose, black was the big winner on the red carpet. Almost 30 percent of all premiere looks worn for top-grossing movies in the analysis were black. The movies whose leads wore it went on to gross over $42 billion.
White came in a distant second, followed by a tie between blue and pink, then silver and red. Stars aren’t big on multi-colored looks, either. Almost 62 percent of them went for a one-color premier look.
When it comes to brands, Dior was the big winner, showing up more often at premieres of top-grossing movies than any other luxury label. Actors in Dior included Anya Taylor-Joy (The Super Mario Bros. Movie), Rebecca Ferguson (Dune: Part One), Kristen Bell (Frozen II), Charlize Theron (The Fate of the Furious), Felicity Jones (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), and Jennifer Lawrence, who wore Dior twice (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2). Collectively, the movies whose female leads wore Dior at a premiere went on to gross almost $7 billion.
Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton tied as the second luckiest brand worn at film premieres of box office hits (six outfits each), followed by Givenchy (five), and then Versace and Valentino (four each). Stella McCartney, Armani, Georges Hobeika, and Vivienne Westwood made the red carpet three times each.
While the study didn’t include footwear, Vogue recently noted stars’ penchant for strappy, less-is-more stiletto sandals that don’t compete with outfits for attention on the red carpet. Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Gianvito Rossi, Amina Muaddi, and Femme LA are popular choices. Meanwhile, stars who crave comfort favor British brand Sole Bliss, according to The New York Times.
Of course, heels aren’t always relegated to a supporting role. Marie Claire recently rounded up some of the most eye-catching shoes ever to grace the red carpet, from Lady Gaga’s crystal-covered Armanis to Serena Williams’ Off-White x Nike sneakers.
