Back-to-school and new sneakers go together like hot dogs and mustard. But there are thousands of families across the country who struggle to provide what many take for granted—like new kicks, backpacks, and essential school supplies.
Enter the The Athlete’s Foot, along with Refugee Life Foundation and Community Retail Association & Youth Guidance, who teamed recently for “Back2School Kicks Chicago 2025.” The event fitted hundreds of kids with new sneakers and backpacks to start the year prepared—and in style. Attendees were also treated to a variety of athletic activities and interactive games, creating a fun and memorable experience.
On hand to help distribute the merchandise and welcome kids back to school were Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Alderwoman Michelle Harris, Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller, Former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and former NBA players Kendall Gill, Antonio Davis, and Alando Tucker.
The Back2School Kicks coalition all have vast experience in community organizing. Refugee Life Foundation, Youth provides funds for refugee families both domestic and globally and advocates for causes where injustice and inequality exist. The Community Retail Association launched Kick Back to the community program in early 2022 with the mission to organize retailers to give back to the neighborhoods where member shops are located. Youth Guidance created and implements school-based programs that enable children to overcome obstacles, focus on their education and, ultimately, to succeed in school and in life. The Athlete’s Foot is a worldwide retailer founded in 1971 and is considered the first athletic specialty store of its kind.
It’s always better to give than receive.
