Behind the Scenes of the ASICS x GDLP ‘Tropicália’ Campaign Shoot

Hypebeast Brazil peeked behind the curtain and accompanied the exclusive photoshoot for ASICS’ GEL-LYTE III TROPICÁLIA campaign. The revived sneaker style is a first-time global collaboration between ASICS and Brazilian sneaker shop, Guadalupe, that pays homage to Tropicália, a movement that forever impacted Brazilian culture and art.The project was shot by Brazilian photographer Hick Duarte and featured models reminiscent of the talented musicians involved in the movement. The campaign’s bright, psychedelic scenery was designed to look like a Helio Oiticica work of art — the main visual artist linked to the movement, taking audiences on a journey through time.In between shots our team was able to grab Pedro Andrade, the designer responsible for the sneaker, Pedro Prado, and TwoThousand and Edson Feijão, partners owners of Guadalupe for a quick chat about the project. What are the challenges of developing a sneaker inspired by a subject with such an iconic visual identity as the Tropicalist movement?Pedro Andrade: To create something taking inspiration from a theme so iconic with huge importance not only in music, but also in the politics and history of our country, was a great challenge because it required from me a lot of sensibility that goes beyond the aesthetics of the product, but also through the message that will be delivered with this sneaker. There are these little details that access the affective memory of the consumer and that makes a difference in the final result. Why did you choose this theme for a sneaker collaboration?Pedro Prado: As this sneaker would be released in many countries, we had to think about a theme that is globally recognized. That’s why we chose Tropicália. Besides being a well-known theme of Brazilian culture, the movement had an important role in our culture in general, not only musically. There is also a little similarity between Tropicália and the Brazilian sneakerhead culture — both, in a way, adopted a cultural movement that came from outside of the country. This collaboration with ASICS is our first sneaker that will be sold in the main sneaker shops around the world, so the theme should be memorable and connected directly with our country’s history. How does the GEL-LYTE III model relate to the Brazilians who love sneakers?TwoThousand: Besides being our favorite model from the ASICS portfolio, the GEL-LYTE III is one of the most important silhouettes for sneakerhead culture. This sneaker reaches all kinds of sneakerheads, but the ones that love it the most are the “nerds,” the ones that cherish material quality and legendary history. Almost all stores that are references for Guadalupe around the world have their very own version of the GEL-LYTE III, so to be able to do our version is surreal. It’s also a very relevant way to show the size and strength of the sneakerhead lifestyle in Brazil. How do you see the Brazilian sneaker market’s evolution through the years?Feijão: The sneaker market here in Brazil has evolved a lot in the last few years, following the global scenario. Today we realize that sneaker culture has transcended the sneakerhead niche and almost everyone has a connection to it. The role of Guadalupe is to serve this consumer directly connected with the lifestyle sneakerhead and also to show and educate the new consumers that have a newly found interest in this culture that we live in.The shoe will be available worldwide in selected sneaker stores on July 21st. Early Look at the Air Jordan 4 “Midnight Navy”

One strategy that Jordan Brand tends to implement for its retro footwear category is to dive into its archives and modernize its classical colorways. When it comes to the Air Jordan 4, one of the silhouette’s most iconic offerings is the “White Cement” iteration, and in Fall 2022 it’s slated to be reimagined with “White/Midnight Navy” color scheme that’s extremely resemblant.Throwback design elements can been seen through the gray and black speckled patterns that dress up the cages, heel counters and midsole pieces. Premium leather overlays and netted areas atop the throat and quarter panels are prepared with a crisp white hue while “Midnight Navy” accents are dropped onto the eyelets, midsole molds and the less-favored Jumpman logos that adorn the rear.Check out early images of the pair right here and note that early reports have this colorway scheduled to drop on October 1, 2022. The retail price is expected to be $210 USD.Elsewhere in the world of sneakers, images of an upcoming Air Jordan 1 Low “Bordeaux” have appeared.

Paul George Is Revving Up a Hot Wheels x Nike PG 6 Collaboration

Outside of life on the basketball court, Paul George is known to dabble into various hobbies such as golfing, spending time in the great outdoors fishing as well as growing his already impressive car collection. In relation to the latter, George has always had an affinity for automobiles, and so Nike is honoring this by fashioning him a playful Hot Wheels x Nike PG 6 collaboration. The nostalgic toy car brand has remixed his signature basketball model with a plethora of details. A majority of the synthetic upper has been formatted with a bold blue-to-red gradient effect, which likely reflects the Hot Wheels logo. Reversed Swooshes on the lateral panels and his number 13 on the medial side have been modified with fiery allure, and the entire throat has been covered in black and white checkerboard patterns to call out the final lap flag in a race. Tongues split their branding between the Clippers guard’s logo on the right shoe and the Hot Wheels insignia on the left. And to top everything off, the insoles have been styled with red flames and co-branded hits.No release date has been announced just yet, but it’s likely that these will be released in the coming weeks for $120 USD.In other news, Nike’s new Air Kukini “Mighty Swooshers” has been uncovered.
