PRO-Keds first released its Super sneaker back in 1969, and the low-top canvas design with a thick rubber sole quickly caught on in New York — becoming so popular, in fact, it was nicknamed the “Uptowner” more than a decade before the Air Force 1 was dubbed the “Uptown.” in the ’80s. Now, in 2021, the Super sneaker is back again but with a decidedly modern twist: sustainable materials. Five different builds are used on the shoes. There’s a recycled, unbleached canvas, rugged recycled denim and a recycled canvas with a vintage floral print, plus an ecologically conscious vachetta leather and a sustainably made suede. Save for the floral print, many of the uppers feature a monochromatic, no-frills look that retains the Super sneaker’s classic ethos. Interested parties can expect the PRO-Keds Super sneaker’s sustainable lineup to begin its rollout on August 6 via the PRO-Keds webstore and select global retail partners. Prices start at $65 USD for canvas pairs and run up to $90 USD for the leather-based pair.
