Martine Rose’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection transported London to the beating heart of Great British community, culture and nightlife, mixing the kind of garments ’90s ravers would wear to community center lock-ins with the shirt from your dad’s wardrobe. The result was a collection only Rose could produce, heavy on the nuanced understanding of what style really means. And with that, the designer also took the opportunity to debut her upcoming collection as Clarks’ first-ever guest Creative Director. The SS24 collection, titled “Coming up Roses,” is a spin on familiar classics. For Rose, these styles include The Oxford and The Loafer, which have been given a reworking that falls well within the designer’s spectrum. Her eponymous brand’s shoes and loafers are often subversive, ranging from styles that are bulbously round to others decorated in snakeskin prints or buckles. Likewise, the “Coming up Roses” loafer style has been turned into a chunky wedge heel, and while it does maintain the signature Penny strap across the vamp, it blends into the design thanks to an all-encompassing snakeskin design, found in pink, brown, or green. The Oxford can also be seen in the snakeskin takes, but shows off its details best in black. We find a sort of puffy worn-in design that’s split between a toe cap, a middle section, and the lace compartment, all of which are defined by stitching that manipulates the shape of the shoe.Martine Rose’s first Clarks collection can be previewed in the gallery above.
